Cherry
Point Was No Bowl Of Cherries
34.90° N 76.88° W

When I first came to Fort Bliss, I was dismayed at the racial
tensions I saw among the army soldiers, the numerous violent
incidences and the prevalent drug use. I had figured these
deviant behaviors were phenomena common only in the other
services, not in my beloved Marine Corp.
I
figured we were different. At Fort Bliss, when a group of
Marines went into town, people could tell the difference between
Marines and the army guys, even if we were wearing civilian
clothes. Same clothes, same haircuts, same age, but we walked
and we held ourselves differently. We had different attitudes.
This is why I thought Marines would not get involved in behavior
not conducive to team survival. I was to find that this was one
of many cherished dreams - which would prove to be nothing but
pipe dreams, ‘gone up in smoke’. I would soon find out that the
only thing worse than being in the Marines
at Cherry Point was prison.
