EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK:
Cribs, Potties, and Playpens
In my own
personal life; after my premature launching, the very first
thing that I can recall was being alone in a dimly lit room. My
eyes struggled to adjust to new images. I was in my crib
crying.
I had milk… I was
dry… but I was lonely for my mother. I was a tumble of emotions
and reflexive animal need. I had an aching that only my mother
could comfort. If I could have spoken or thought in words, I
would have said, “Damn it, I want my mother!”
I was screaming and
crying while she was trying to sleep in the other room.
I was following
instinctual blueprints designed for maximum attention.
Evidently, I had gone to the
well too often as I was still left unattended. Filled with
primitive rage, I ripped off the nipple on the feeder bottle
with my mouth and tossed it out of the crib, splashing the
remaining milk on a nearby wall and floor. I tortured my poor
mother with this ritual vandalism for months.
Feeling despair
that only a first time mother could appreciate, my mother sought
the counsel of friends and family. They told her that I wanted
to be breastfed, but unfortunately my mother had dried early and
could not fulfill this need.
Once again, my
violence caused my mother to awake from her slumber. With weary
repetition she came in, gave me a new bottle, and again I tore
off the nipple and tossed the bottle.
My vandalism
frustrated my mother. Finally, unable to bear the frustration,
my mother left me to my crying.
The memory fades out…
