Getting
Back On Track – The Month Of Cluster-Fucks
My life was
finally getting on track. Aside from the month of working a
sporadic number of hours at the P.O., everything else seemed to
be shaping up. That was one tough month! Some days I would only
work two-hour days and then sent home. On other days I worked up
to twelve hours. Because I did not have the funds to have my car
repaired, that month I was forced to walk twenty-four miles
round-trip to and from work in sub zero weather. Two-hour days,
were hard on my financial status, twelve-hour days was hard on
my body.
Those long days did not leave me much time for sleep.
Good and bad
luck seems to happen in groups of three of more, and that month
was no exception. Some days the furnace in my trailer would go
out while I was at work, and I would come home to an icebox. My
breath was ice filled vapor, my trailer inside was five below
zero, and my pipes were frozen.
One morning, I
woke up to a dream of waterfall spraying. I woke up to a soaked
bed and a wet freezing body. The main water pipe that fed the
bathroom ran under my bed, and as the temperature had risen
while I slept, the pipes that had split from the expansion of
the ice, melted, allowing the water to escape in a geyser. In a
panic, I stumbled outside in my fruit of a loom, crawled through
the snow to get under the trailer to shut off that damn water
main. Pretty tough job with vise-grips and frozen water main!
Other then that
cluster-fuck month, things were still looking up. Afterwards, I
started saving money and getting my social life back on track.
Eventually, I was able to have my car repaired, drive to King of
Prussia and hang out with my friends again. In addition to old
friends, I was enjoying weight training with new people at the
trailer park. Larry and Harry trained with me as well. Each
workout, we would take all of the weight equipment stored in the
trailer and put it out in the yard. A lot of the neighborhood
boys hung out and trained, though usually they just liked to
watch.
I loved the
fact I could train again, but true to my nature, I always wanted
to keep improving my performance. At this time, I only weighed
one hundred and sixty-five pounds and kept my calories down to
stay light.
I was only into
performance. Since my training seemed to hit a standstill, I
decided to perfect my diet; I even quit drinking. I decided to
start back with meditation, visual imagery and self-hypnosis.
For good measure I threw in some hatha yoga exercises, too.
Back then we
trained with just two sets of ten repetitions for every basic
exercise. I liked to perform one set of twenty-five reps with as
much weight as I could after I completed the two sets of ten
reps for each exercise. Larry and Harry and my other friends
refused to do the twenty-five reps because that went against
conventional wisdom of the day, taught by so many of the
experts.
