Guard Duty And The Diaper Cases

One night, my drill instructor assigned two of us to guard duty. Our shift was a four-hour stint from midnight till four A.M. We were taken to a squad bay where they kept roughly one hundred recruits who were in the process of washing out.

Their squad bay, unlike ours was kept locked from the outside. They were being detained and separate from the general population of Parris Island, because there was a question as to their sanity. They were sequestered for observation… to see who had actually flipped and who was faking.

It was a fearful situation, there, in the dark armed with only a flashlight as I walked the center of the squad bay, it was apparent that I had been thrown in with people who were actually insane or were motivated to act insane so they could get out of military service. I wondered, would either group be motivated to attack me because of insane or devious agendas. There I was, thrown in with thrashers, screamers, moaners and mumblers.

The squad bay was filled with men who pulled their own hair, wept and gnashed their teeth, and the diaper cases that wet their beds and shit their pants. A few of them were held down by restraints in their bunk. Too few for my comfort!

It was then that I one again had my doubts about the Minnesota MultiPhasic Personality test or any of the tests used to determine our emotional stability, or our competence as human beings. I wondered how close to the mark of truth that the Armed Forces evaluations of me were. I wondered if the Armed Forces simply gathered information and just conveniently ignored the truth.

Although, if truth be told, years later, when I became a landlord, or on more than one occasion when I had shared a rental with roommates, I sometimes yearned to have many of those washouts

I patrolled that night living with me, instead of some of the roommates and tenants I have been forced to endure.
