Every one at the gym seemed to be intrigued to hear about these
Utopia inventions.”
I asked, “What
inventions are they?”
Everyone else
in the gym was also blurting out similar questions. Some of
these members were eager and shared the same belief, while the
other members sarcastically agreed.
Juan says, “As
we speak, communication technologies have been and are
continuing to be develop that will allow easy access to
information for practically everyone.” “It will enable and allow
for world wide communication at the finger tips of hundreds of
millions of people around the world.
Harry said,
“Yeah right!, So we got to wait a couple hundred years for this
scientific bullshit right?”
Larry jumps in,
“You know what they say, “Science fiction always precedes
science fact.”
Juan said, “In
1969 the U.S. military started to develop a communication system
that would allow for communication in the event of a nuclear
war, or damage done to a countries media infrastructure by
terrorist, civil upheaval or by natural disasters.” “The
military recognized the necessity of keeping some sort of
communications open, not only here, but around the world also.”
“They
understood that they needed to put in a way of communicating
that would allow or foster a web of a variety of addresses to
touch bases with each other. For instances, if NORAD may not for
what ever reason be able to communicate directly with a base in
Florida, they wanted to set up a way of reaching them through a
backdoor route, by working through a base in Germany to route
the communication to Florida.” “They also wanted to communicated
information and documents or be able to direct orders that was
kept separate from the public but by utilizing public and
non-public phone lines, satellite signals, cable lines, et
cetera.”
Juan said, “The
military is using a network of geographically separated
computers that exchanges information by a newly developed
protocol.” “An additional reason for creating this network is
that many of the top brass and people in the U.S. government are
frustrated by the fact that there is a limited number of very
large, powerful research computers in the U.S. and they see the
advantage of many military research investigators having access
to all the computers despite different geographical locations
and separation of the computers to each other.”
Juan continued,
“This system is called ARPAnet, and back in the early
seventies electronic mail was developed to allow people to send
simple messages back and forth to each other., and starting in
the seventies and as we speak the big universities are making
use of this technology to share research and help each other to
crunch numbers.”
“Harry was
getting impatient and he blurted out, “What in hell does this
have to do with the future of politics?”
Juan said,
“That’s a good question mate and I am getting to it, so hold ta
yer testicles.” “Just a few years ago news group networks were
set up to share breaking news stories, -- now a local news
agency can report on what happened this morning in China.”
Harry blurted
out again, “Look, just because the media can share information
that doesn’t mean that will do private citizens any good.” “I
mean I really don’t care what happens to a bunch of China men,
-- what does that have to do with me?”
Mike Driscoll
got a little pissed and said, in a mocking voice, “Me, me ,me,
what does it have to do with me!” “You know Harry you always act
as if everything is about you!”
Harry’s face turned
red and he looked like the emotions of fear and rage were locked
in combat.
Fearing violence, or
at least the discontinuation of this stimulating conversation
I jumped in, “Come on
now, I want to see where Juan is going with this!”
Juan looks and
both Mike and Harry and he says to both of them, “Its okay
mates, whether ya like it or not Harry’s question is a realistic
one.” “Ya see people have to see what is in it for them.”
Harry looked
over at Mike with an arrogant and smug look on his face as if to
say, “See I was right.”
Juan said to
Mike in his peculiar accent, “Mikey here is not only
compassionate in that he is likely to help people even if he
didn’t see how it serves him, he is also smart… he knows that
what happens in China can affect us here.”
Steve Miller
popped up from his triceps pushdowns and said, “How does what
happens in China affect us here.
Larry said, “I
don’t see it either, unless they send nuclear missiles over here
or something to that affect.
