Juan
Talks About How Humans Carry Over Their Tendency to Argue in
Politics
A new guy named
Old Mike jumped in and said, “What does this have to do with the
political workings of our country?”
Gary said,
“Well that’s, simple, what Juan is saying is that all of us are
loyal to a political party, to a politician, to a philosophy of
ethics and laws for our society, and also I believe Juan is
pointing out that the politicians are also loyal to particular
point of views.” “I can see that we all tend to be too loyal to
our ideas and philosophies to the detriment of healthy
functioning of our society and government, and I would agree
with Juan.”
Harry blurted
out with tone of scorn in his voice, “You seem to agree with
anyone!”
Gary said, “I
do agree with ideas that seem logical until proven otherwise,
and I have to admit, I don’t like to be wrong, but I do tend to
change my mind when relevant evidence is brought up.”
I was pleased
to hear that from Gary since he was sort of my coach for Power
lifting. He was pretty smart and was a new schoolteacher to the
area. True to his newest assertion, Gary did change his stance
on a few training ideas, he did a 180 degree turn around
regarding his view on high reppers and on the training protocol
that I had on the bench. He changed his mind because He saw the
evidence of what it did for me and what it did for him and the
other lifters in the gym. Harry and a few other people in the
gym ignore the evidence and continue to perform poorly. I
thought this was a prime example of what Juan was trying to
point out.
Juan looked at
Gary and said, “That is exactly what I mean mate!” “I would
like to bring up one other point relevant to what my mate Ludwig
has pointed out.” Mark Ludwig was smiling looking pleased that
he had mentioned a few things that were relevant.
Mark asked,
“What was that?”
Juan said,
“Mark mentioned earlier in the conversation that regardless of
what people thought of his workout program, no one could stop
him from training the way he wanted.” “Mark is able to enjoy or
suffer from his freedom to employ any program he wants to
indulge in.” “Many cultures, particularly yours often violate
your citizen’s privilege to live in they way they want even if
it does not prove to be at the detriment of the individual or
the society in which that person lives.
Harry chimes in
and says’ “But as you said, this happens in other countries and
probably does to a degree in all countries.”
Juan smiled and
said, “Yes, very good Harry, it does seem to be a universal
problem.” “The problem with this country and its citizens is the
illusion that each of you as scrambling individuals are freer
than you actually are.” “Most of you as individuals & as a group
believe that you have God given rights “Life, Liberty, & the
Pursuit of Happiness”, and this conditioning of belief is
equally at war with the feeling that your are powerless to stop
the corruption, powerless to have your wishes heard and honored
by your representatives, and powerless to know where to begin to
make changes if you are inclined to do so.”
Juan went on,
“The powerful conditioning is at odds with the opposite
conditioning and this is what causes anxiety, fear, apathy, and
paralysis., -- this of course encourages people to adopt
dogmatic viewpoints that we cling to as strongly as we would
cling to a life saver.” “Because of how we are accustomed to
operating as individuals and as a society we really do not see
away out of the mess.”
Juan looked
around and everyone seemed to be held in sway of his command of
the subject matter we had been discussing.
Juan spoke again and said,
“It’s not encouraging to realize that our representatives are
also dismayed at the dance that they agreed to participate in,
they know that they are operating in a political morass.”
