EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK:

VINCE'S GYM

Juan Talks About How We Cling To Beliefs Without Experimentation, or Checking Validation

Juan said, “Let me give ya an example by using yer own field of expertise ta git my point across.”

With feelings of trepidation I said, “OK”

““Vinny, you have found that there are two schools of thought in regards to training weights, two distinct methods, am I right?”

I said, “Yes…some people believe that training with moderate to high reps is the best way of gaining size and strength, while other people believe that training only with low reps, such as 5 reps and under is the best way to gain size and strength.

Juan said, “That is not the only dispute with training, am I correct?”

I said, “No, there is the difference of opinion of on what is the most effective amount of time to rest between sets, some people like me likes to take a lot of rest between sets, other people like to take very little rest between sets.”

Juan said, “What other methods in lifting do ya see that people are polarized on?”

Gary jumped in and said, “There is the argument that high volume training is the best way to train and then you have Arthur Jones who is promoting super low volume, and Arthur Jones also brings into the question the difference of high speed sets, and low speed or slow sets.”

Harry said, “There is the opposite views that some people believe that training as frequently as possible is the best way to make gains, while other people believe that it is best to train as infrequent as possible, and most people don’t realize that there may be the necessity to use both methods at specific times.”

Juan said, “Right on Harry, that is very insightful and addresses one of the points I would like to make.”

Harry glowed with pleasure from Juan’s acknowledgement of his mental acuity.

Juan said, “Each of you was practically arguing to the death your dogmatic viewpoints on what the best or only method of working out is.” “That is how most human beings operate in regards to religion, politics, legal issues, child rearing, how they eat, social ethics and morals.” “This is how most people react when discussing sex or sexual preferences, --the list is endless.”

Harry shot back. “You can’t compare all of that with weight training, -- that is like comparing apples to oranges!”

Juan replied, “You are somewhat right, but don’t forget, apples and oranges are both in the fruit category.” “However it would be incorrect to fall into an assumption that since it’s not apples and apples then the arguments must be like comparing apples and sirloin steak.” “That is a common assumption that people fall into…no in this case Harry yer right, it is Apples and oranges.”

Harry somewhat mollified said, “Yeah, but since it is apples and oranges, then comparisons would be useless.”

Juan smile patiently, “Not necessarily, it is often useful to compare items of scrutiny that have more in common than they have different.” “It is sometimes helpful to start off with generalizations that broad.” “Then from there we must tighten up the arguments as we progress towards our aim at finding the truth.” “And if not the exact truth, then we search for the most effective blueprint with which we can work with.”

Everyone in the gym went quiet again to ponder all of what was debated.

Juan sat back and was silent for a bit while everyone was arguing the superiority of each method. As I looked over at him I could see that he had a smile on his face and those peculiar eyes of his seemed brighter and the gold and blue specks in the brilliant green irises appeared to swirl in odd patterns. Juan caught me looking at him and his smile broadened showing his flashing teeth and he gave me a conspiratorial wink.  I shivered, and I turned my attention back to the arguing group of people. Each person was invested in one or two methods of weight training while excluding all of the others. The arguments got more intense, louder and the people in the gym that day were asserting their viewpoint was superior to the other people. The only two exceptions to this were Mike Driscoll and me.
