My Dad, - A Wild, Wild West Kind Of Guy
To better
illustrate my father’s unpredictability, a former friend of my
brother James told me the following story of an incident that
occurred while I was in the Marines.
My father was
usually home when my stepmother was away at work. He would sit,
thinking up some wrong or slight that she had committed, real or
imagined. One day while my brother was visiting, my father
grabbed my stepmother’s collection of silver coins and dollar
bills that she saved in a gallon wide-mouth wine jar. It was
more than three quarters of the way to the top; filled with the
booty she had spent years collecting. She was waiting for the
day it was completely filled, so she could count out the money
and buy something special for herself.
My father, out
of a need to exact revenge for some imagined crime, took the
jar, threw it into the fireplace and burned it up. Then he went
to sit on the patio with his legs crossed (his usual manner of
relaxing), enjoying a few more drinks. My brother and his friend
were visiting when my dad’s second wife came into the house,
greeting everyone in sight. My father merely grunted and mumbled
under his breath while giving her a glassy-eyed stare. My
brother and I had learned to recognize that this meant my dad
was in a very dangerous frame of mind.
My stepmother
had gone into the living room, where she saw her treasure being
consumed by the flames. She went nuts!! She came out to confront
my brother about it, since he was considered so unruly as to be
capable of such vandalism.
When she found
that my brother had just gotten there, she realized it was my
father who was the culprit. Then the fur started to fly. My
stepmother wasn’t shy about initiating physical violence and my
father wasn’t shy about retaliating if attacked. From what my
brother’s friend shared, it was a street fight of epic
proportions. Halfway through, my stepmother managed to get my
father out of the house and, while he was rolling around drunk,
closed and locked both the screen and sliding glass doors. My
father simply took a cinder block and smashed his way back into
the house. She freaked out and ran into the kitchen, grabbing a
large knife for defense.
He tried to
block her from leaving but, instead, she stabbed him in the
side. My dad fell back and started yelling from pain and
indignation, using his hand to stanch the flow of blood. My
stepmother freaked out more, as she realized she might have
mortally wounded my father.
If she hadn’t,
there was the likelihood he would retaliate by killing her
before he died. She dashed out of the house and got into her
car, intent on driving away. By the time she got the car going,
my father was making like Jim West in “The Wild, Wild, West,”
his arms spread wide while he scuttled back and forth in an
attempt to keep her from driving away.
As she tried to
mow him down with the car, my dad leaped onto the hood, staying
on by placing his hand in the groove between the hood and
windshield. He was yelling and cussing at her as she sped out of
the cul-de-sac, demanding that she stop and telling her that he
was going to kill her if he got his hands on her.
As he was
beating on the windshield, she lurched and swerved in an effort
to dislodge him. Finally she succeeded, speeding off, leaving my
father flat on his ass, bleeding all over his tattered clothes.
