EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK:

VINCE'S GYM

Neo Talks About Time and Space

Once I asked Neo what he thought about time and space

      Neo quipped, “Time is short.’'

“There is time enough for love.”

“If you got the space I got the time.”

Then he does a Curly of the Three Stooges, “Ya, ya, ya, ya, ah a wise guy eh?”

I tried to respond with a Moe of the Three Stooges imitation, “Ok porcupine I’ll muyda ya.” “No, seriously Neo, do you think that we sometimes we can see or predict the future?”

Neo was wiping down the book cases with a damp cloth to pick up a few remains of the dust. He seemed to ignore my question while remaining focused on his task. He wiped the last of the dust of the one bookcase, looked up and said, “Yes.” and then went over to another bookcase to repeat the ritual.

“That’s it,” I thought? “Just a simple yes and no explanation,”

I lamented privately. I sighed knowing I was going to have to pull teeth to get him to explain himself while he was into one of his quasi-autistic cleaning modes. Neo was not trying to be rude. Sometimes he would stop everything he was doing and give you his full attention. Other times he would continue to work at superhuman speed and efficiency as he conversed.

A few occasions like tonight he would seem to be in his own little zone, and until he was ready to come back, he would stay there and I would have to wait. That was the way with Neo.

“Neo, I volunteered, I have had dreams that have come true.”

I rushed on hoping I suppose to overwhelm him with information so as to get more of a response from him, “Nothing has grand as dreaming about a winning lottery number or predicting who will win the World Series, just small insignificant stuff as far as global things go.”

Neo was still mostly absorbed with his task as if he was practicing a new high form of meditation, he managed to grunt, “Yeah that’s how it usually goes.”

Frustrated and not to be denied I continued, “It’s like I would dream something that did not seem to make sense at the time and then the event would happen and all of the pieces would seem to fall together.”

Neo grunted an obligatory, “Hum hmm, and he continued to glide from one book cast to another in the fluid movements of a dancer. The pieces of cloth that he had in each hand flowed and caressed the wood cases in an intricate pattern that reminded me of the hand movements of a Balinese dancer that I had seen on a National Geographic type of movie. Years later I would the movie “Karate Kid” brought back this memory, when I heard Mr. Miyagi telling Daniel LaRusso, “Daniel San, wax on, wax off!

I bulled forward and said, “Yeah, I guess the reason why the dreams did not initially make sense was because it was like listening in to a conversation that has been going on for a while and then leaving before it finishes.”

Neo did not seem to acknowledge me as his emerald eyes seemed to grow brighter, even luminous as he continued on his mission.

I was searching in my mind to think of what else I could peg to this one-sided conversation.

Finally I added, “Yeah, the image of people I have never seen before, saying things that I have never heard, at places I have never been to, doing things that I have never done, and I would wonder why I dreamed this weird shit.” “Looking for a response I said, “Then the fragment of the event would happen just like in the dream and then it would make sense.”

“Neo’s body and hands were moving in beautiful tandem over the bookcases leaving a lustrous high sheen. His eyes were brighter and more luminous. His face glowed with pleasure as his speed and fluidity of movement picked up.

Fascinated, I wondered how long I would have to engage in this one-side conversation, or how long he would continue to work over the bookcases.

I persisted and said, “Don’t you see Neo… the seemingly nonsensical dreams that I had were fragments of what happen; that’s why they did not make sense until the actual events would happen in its entirety.”

Neo without stopping or slowing from his zone finally says, “That’s what most people seem to experience.”

Neo was almost at the last bookcase. I wondered if you would stop when he finished with the last or start over with a new task non-stop, so devoted and single minded he seemed to be?

I said, “Do you think that you or I could one day see with unerring accuracy all future events?”

Neo reached the last section of the last book case and then he stopped, turned lightly around, wiping his hands, his expression was intent, his eyes luminous and then he sighed with abysmal comfort and then said in a perfect Yoda rendition, “Difficult to see.” “Always in motion is the future.” Hrrgh.”

Neo’s normal voice returned and he said, “Let’s go to the break room.”

Always willing to sit and snack I complied.

Neo prepared coffee and tea in is usual efficient manner as he talked.

Neo looked intent as he said, “Time seems linear to humans.” “This is our perception.”

My ears picked up on what I thought were Neo’s subtle message.

      “Isn’t time linear,” I asked?

With a cup in each hand Neo glided to his seat and handed me my coffee and commenced to enjoy his tea.

Neo said, “I prefer to talk about space and size perspective… time is a subject too complex than I want to tackle today.

I was impatient and wanted to know more of what I had been obsessive on that day.

“But I would rather know about time and prophecy,” I said, with frantic impatience.

Neo smiled and said, “In time, in time.” “Space and size is something that will be an easier task for you ta wrap yer intellect around.”

Seeing the Neo would not be diverted, I capitulated, “Okay,” I sighed.

Neo looked at me intently as he stirred his tea, he said, “Let’s start with the atom.” “You know that atoms are pretty small little units of matter, right.”

I said with annoyance, “I do go to college Neo… of course I know that they are very small units of matter.” “I know that they are smaller than the eye can see, I know that they are too small to see with any microscope except the electron microscope and only indirectly and barely.”

“Neo half mocking waved a finger at me as he said, “Don’t be so sensitive Mr. Man… you and I will be going through the train of thought together, that’s all.” “Now where was I?” “Oh right… a large atom is about  .0001 micron in diameter, or approximately .0000000045th of an inch in diameter.  The nucleus of an atom is about forty- times smaller that the diameter of an atom. The electrons and quarks are about 9,000 times smaller that the size of the nucleus within the atom.”

The numbers he quoted were too vast for my mind to grasp. I simply said, “I guess it’s safe to say that those damn atoms are very, very small, and each unit of the atom gets progressively smaller.”

“Yep, very small,” he chuckled. “To give you another perspective if an atom was the size of the earth the electrons orbiting the nucleus at high speeds would be the size of marichinos cherries.”

Sarcastically I said, “Marichinos cherries, and no others?”

Neo snorted in delight, “Okay smartass. ya can think of other cherries as well.” “Now if we were to back engineer once more, and looked at the next lower level of units that make up the quarks or charms, we would see that these units are composed of yet smaller units called ‘superstring energy’, if I have learned from my mate Fritjof Capra correctly then these superstrings are called quanta, which is not exactly or either matter or energy.” “Or perhaps quanta’s are made up of superstring energy.” “This is something that you and I may want to contact Fritjof about.” “At any rate, theses superstrings possess different patterns of fluctuating energy, and this gives these superstrings of energy different qualities.” Neo appeared to look inward to the faraway place I had often seen him go and he said, “Just imagine if ya can that atoms…all the matter that we see around us… this floor, you and me is really composed of 99.999999999999999% empty space.

Amazed as usual of Neo’s store house of knowledge and his circle of “Mates” I asked him who in the hell Frit... Fridg… whatever… I could not pronounce his first name, “Capra, who is he?”

Neo said, “He’s a high energy physicist that I have become friends with.” “I adopted Fritof to become one of my mentors, and he was a mentor fer me on many levels.” “My mate Fritjof wrote a great book that came out in 1975 called the ‘Tao of Physics.” “It is an excellent book that has helped mystics and physicists to start engaging in dialogue with each other.” “Now more mystics are interested in learning physics and more physicists to start practicing meditations and yoga along with an assorted number of mind, body and spiritual disciplines.”

I was curious to know everything about the book so I asked Neo to tell me everything about the book.

Neo looked irritated and said, ‘”Vinny, ya got to read it yerself, If I tell you what I know…ya would be getting only my perspective on his book.”

“I’m pleased that you would trust me ta regal you with everything in the book, but ya really need to hear other peoples perspective on any given matter.” “Believe it or not, I am not the ‘be all to end all’ of any given subject.”

Feeling nonplussed I asked, “So Mr. Capra has only one book for me to read?”

Neo said, “So far that is his only book, but I don’t think I am speaking out of school if I mention that he has been working on a new book that should be coming out in a few months to a year.”

What is the book going to be called… I’ll keep a lookout for it,” I asked?

Neo tilted his head as a gesture of retrieving information from his head and said, “I’m not sure, but I think it is going to be called “Changing Point”, or “Turning Point” or something like that.”

“Tell me more about the superstring energy,” I pleaded.

Neo stretched backed cracking his ligaments and joints as he continued his tutaling, “Supposedly at the quantum level, there are infinite numbers of superstring units are operating at different frequencies or patterns and at this level to physicists everything appears to be chaotic.” “From chaos comes order.” “However, I believe that even at this seemly chaotic level if you were capable of looking from a certain perspective there probably would be a pattern of beautiful order.”

I let out a long whistle, “Wow, that is a hell of an explanation of the atomic world.”

Neo whistled his agreement then said, “The reason for this long winded diatribe is simply to point out two main themes.” “The first point is to share with ya the magnificence of the atomic and subatomic level”

“The second and most important point is that physicists have found that they can influence the outcome of some of their high particle experiments by their desire, intent or thoughts.”

I looked doubtful and said, “Are you sure that they are not just their perceptions?”

Neo leaned forward with excitement and said, “No, I do not mean that their perception of influence changes, but an actual influence to and on the particle happens.” “Another neat thing concerning atoms is the perspectives that ya can get about the relative size of the particles within the atom and the distances that they are from each other by using some real life comparisons.”

Now I was leaning forward with more interest to see what real life comparisons he would use.

Neo saw that I was ready and eager to hear what he had to say so he said, “If you were to compare the size of an atom to the size of our solar system and our sun compared to the nucleus of the atom; this means that the distance between the atom’s nucleus to the first electron orbit would be about twice the distance or our sun is to the planet Pluto.”

      I gasped, “That is amazing.”

Neo said, “Yeah it is.” “Even the protons and neutrons within the nucleus have vast distances between them.” “It is only the fact that the particles within the atom is orbiting or vibrating at such high velocities that keeps the atom together.”

“Also if the nucleus of an atom was the size of a grain of sand, then the distance from the center of the atom to the first electron orbit would be from the center of the Vatican dome to its walls.” “Each neutron and proton is made up of quarks and each of these has vast distances between them.”

Always prepared to be the good student, I said, and all of this is why atoms and matter is composed of 99.999999999999999 % empty space?”

Neo clapped in delight and said, “Yes that is correct.”

I wanted to show that I remembered more of the lesson and I volunteered, “And the quarks and charms are made up of units called superstring energy which fluctuates between matter and energy and possess different patterns of fluctuating energy patterns which is why they possess different properties.”

Neo look pleasantly amused and said, “You are a good student mate.”

“I am wondering, I asked, Why does matter feel solid to us everything around us is all of that empty space?”

“That is because all of the electrons in the atoms orbit the nucleus at extraordinarily high velocities and the atoms them selves vibrate at high energy” “Also because of the force of electro-magnetism that is generated from the atom... a force much more powerful than gravity.”  This is what holds atoms, elements and compounds together... simply everything, or almost. “If they didn’t we would be able to pass our hands through other objects.”

I thought of some of my experiences of OBE’s and wondered if physics and atomic properties were the reason for me passing through solid objects and I said as much to Neo.

Neo looked thoughtful as he said, “Yes I see what you mean.” “I believe that the non-ordinary body does vibrate at a different frequency that ordinary articles and therefore that are why your non-ordinary body can pass through.”

“I said, “Okay… I have to bring it up… I know that you are not in love with the Carlos Castaneda books, but how do you explain don Genaro’s ability to have Carlos see him and feel as though he was touching a solid ordinary body?” “Do you think Carlos made it up, or do you think it is possible?”

Neo sighed, “Well I don’t know if Carlos was making up the story or not… but I do believe that some people as described by Carlos are able to control the vibratory frequency of their non-ordinary body so that you and I could see them and feel them.” “Also, this would allow the people traveling about in their non-ordinary body to appear to do superhuman things to our ordinary eyes.”

I felt that Neo’s explanation was so smooth and sensible (As sensible as this subject could be) that I wondered if he had ever experienced the ability to do what don Genaro had and so I asked him outright if he had.

Neo looked more than a little shy as he said, “I have never formed a solid simile from my non-ordinary body so that I would appear solid to other people.”

His reticence to give me a definitive yes or no intrigued me so I said, “”Okay then, have you ever been able to project your non-ordinary body so that others could see you.”

Neo paused for a long time I feared he would not answer then he said,

“My grandfather made himself visible to some of us while he was traveling in his non-ordinary body.” “He was not solid to our touch, nor could we hear him speak… but several of us seen him after he went into a trance while he was on what yer American Indians call a vision quest when he was alone deep in the outback.”

“I asked you if you ever were able to make yerself visible to other people.”

      Neo refused to answer.

      “I said, “Well?”

Neo gets up and stretches, “Well we can talk more about this tomorrow, if you have the time ta help me on a job that I have promised to do.”

Curious, I asked, “Sure, I can help you tomorrow… it is Sunday after all.” “What’ the job?”

Neo said, “I have to do some grafting on some fruit trees for a farmer I do work for occasionally.”

The next day Neo came by in his pickup trunk with the tools in the back and a cooler with food and drinks.

I got into the truck and he pulls out of the gym parking lot gears grinding and trunk lurching.

Mechanical problems have always intimidated me.

“Some mechanical problems,” I asked sagely?

“Yeah, Neo lamented, this bloody truck’s transmission and clutch is going on the fritz.” “I’ll rebuild the streuthin’ bloody truck next week or so,” he said.

We went towards Jasper, the sky was bright blue and the white puffy clouds hung low and moved easterly at a good clip. We got to a small farm between Jasper and Dexter. A skinny farmer in his forties comes out and greets Neo, calling him Fred.

I felt amused as I look accusingly at Neo and said, “Fred?”

Neo just smiled and then greeted the Farmer.

The farmer was wearing faded and splotched overhauls. His hands speckled with age spots, his face creased with long hard exposure to the elements and his eyes looking out from drooping fleshy eyelids were a pale faded blue. The eyebrows above them looked as if they needed a generous trimming. They made me think of a Dr. Seuss character…’Green eggs and ham I am, I am.’ His teeth abused by tobacco and neglect. His manner was loose, friendly and bright.

The farmer introduces him self to me and says, “Any friend of ‘Fred’s’ is a friend of mine.” “Fred here is a magician at grafting.”

Neo grabbed a tool box with what I assumed were the tools he was going to use that day in one hand and the cooler of food in the other. He asked me to carry the five gallon bucket of what turned out to be an asphalt water emulsion mixture… or at least that is what Neo said it was.

The farmer leads us around to the other side of his house where a spacious back porch was located. As we came in view of the porch about five dogs come running straight for us barking and baying with the lead alpha dog pushing ahead of the pack, calm serious, confident and intent.

He was large and beautiful and he appeared to be a mastiff and Staffordshire mix. Just behind him eager to push ahead of the alpha dog but careful enough not to actually do it was a dog that appeared to covet the alpha position. I guess this dog got its ass kicked and bitten from the alpha on more occasions than it could ever forget.

He appeared to be a mix of two or three types of hunting hounds. He was eager to assert his dominance over us and appeared as if it would lunge at us if it wasn’t for the presence of the alpha male and the farmer.

He seemed to defer to the alpha begrudgingly despite his excitement. He acted as if his intentions were dangerous and barely contained. This dog had an air of aggressiveness, fear and expectancy of any opportunity that may unfold his way.

The alpha dog came up to us with cautious confidence and sniffed our hands and then accepted both Neo and I with a welcoming lick and vigorous wagging. The other dogs were skittish, but I managed to coax them to let me pet them and I won them over. Then they ran over to Neo and practically threw themselves at him with unabashed puppy like joy, (They were not puppies). The Alpha wannabe kept skirting me and would never get quite close enough to let me pet him and seemed tempted to bite me. Neo whistled and started to snap his fingers, the snapping had an odd rhythm. The dangerous Alpha wannabe froze for a half minute and looked at Neo intently. It appeared as if Neo and the dog locked eyes. Neo’s eyes appeared bright, unblinking were not challenging, nor were they passive, but seemed to beckoned the dog with a feral invitation.

The dog seemed to break from a spell and ran over to Neo as if it was a puppy greeting its long lost mother whose teat it had suckled since birth. With Neo the dog acted like an exuberant, wiggling, licking, whimpering and wagging puppy. I cannot count the times in twenty some years where Neo seem to exert a power over animals. “He’s a bloody St. Francis he is,” I thought sarcastically.

The farmer ordered the dogs to the vicinity of the back porch. All of the dogs obeyed the farmer except the dangerous dog rolling in pleasure at Neo’s feet. The dog continued to ignore the farmer orders. Neo snapped his fingers and made a schikk, schikk sound normally used by people on horseback at the dog and he then made a dramatic and assertive gesture towards the porch. It seemed as if I could feel that Neo pushed energy at the dog and towards the porch. Whether I imagined this or not matters little since the dangerous hound complied and went dutifully to the porch.

The friendly farmers sun-washed eyes showed surprise and he said, ‘I’ll be damned Fred, I never seen Loki act that way before.” “He really likes you.” (Loki was not the name of the dog, but I forgot the name and Loki seem to fit the dog’s temperament).

The farmer pointed at a small grove of apple trees.

“There they are, he said, those are the ones I need to have the grafts put on.”

He excused himself saying, “Fred, I got to get to my other chores call me if you need me for anything.”

Neo and I went to the small grove of apple trees and the wind was whipping through the grove and the air felt warm and tasted sweet. Neo stop before the first tree and set his toolbox down.

He pulls the tools out and says, ‘Here we go, one budding knife, one grafting knife, a fine tooth saw, pruning shears.” He also pulled out some electrician’s tape, rubber strips, tying material, a small hammer, and a chisel and mallet.

Neo pulls out some wrappings that held damp sawdust and moss. In the wrappings throughout the sawdust and moss were short think stalks or branches laced along the stalk with buds and I asked Neo what they were.

Neo said, “These are called scions and these I have selected from the previous season’s growth while they are still dormant.” “It is very important to get them just before it gets too late in the spring… just before growth starts.”

“Fascinated I asked Neo, “Can you place these anywhere on the tree?”

Neo said, “It’s best ta place them about one, preferably two feet away from the trunk of the tree on branches like this that run off from  the trunk; especially if ya place the scions on the inside of the branch closest to the truck.”

      “Why,” I said?

“Neo looked a little distracted as he said, “Because if ya place the scions to close to the trunk… closer to the crotch then as the truck grows it can grow past where the new graft is set and this could cause the grafts ta be lost.”

“Is there a best time of year to place the grafts on the tree,” I asked?

Neo smiled, pointed his finger for emphasis and said, “Right now.” “Right when the trees are starting to open, and all the way til the flowers start ta blossom.”

I looked around at the apple trees and I noticed that many of the branches had been cut back.

Wanting to show Neo that I knew a little bit about pruning I pointed out my observation.

Neo started to sharpen some of his tools as he said, “Yeah I top worked all of these trees a couple of weeks ago when the weather was colder.” “We are going to place these on the under stock of the tree.”

Curious I asked, “If these trees are already growing apples, why do you have to graft on these buds?”

Neo looking down at the task of sharpening his tools said, “Grafting is a method of revitalizing a tree that may be losing its hardiness or this method ya can graft different types of scions and then the tree can produce different types of apples.

Neo looked at his knife inspecting the sharp sheen he had just put on the edge. He grunted in satisfactions and started to work. I won’t bore you with all of the details of grafting because this is not a horticultural book, the information that I can remember would take up too much space and quite frankly, I remember very little of what Neo had taught me that day. I think I remember that he tried to show me several types of grafting techniques used for different situations and purposes.

If I remember right some of the grafts were, the whip graft, the cleft graft, the side graft, the bridge graft. He explained budding; a type of graft that he said was reserved for later in the summer.

Neo used the knives to make appropriate cuts through the bark or the areas on the top ends that already been cut. “His stevedore hands performed with the dexterity of a surgeon as he cut clefts into the ends of the top work branches. They moved with an odd speed, dexterity and precision that made his hands appear to be an odd alien creature skittering here and there. It was both creepy and thrilling to watch.

I have never seen hands that move that way and would not see the like of that movement for another fifteen years until I watched a friend of mine I call Phoenix play his guitar. His hands, although not near as large a Neo’s were generous in size and he also possessed otherworldly skill and dexterity with his cherished digits.

My job was to take a paddle and dip this into a smaller bucket in which I had poured the asphalt water emulsion mixture into and then I had to ‘dress’ the wound as Neo called it.

Neo starts in with his Curly of the ‘Three Stooges imitation, “La dee, la da… doctor Moe, doctor Larry, please call doctor Curly and doctor Vinny.”

We got a patient that has been dormant all winter and needs ta branch out.” “Yaugh, yaugh, yaugh, “Neo chuckled.

Neo gets more into his childish delight with acting like Curly as he continues to make surgical cuts, “La dee, la da, la dee …awoo, woo, woo, woo, ana-skana-hana-fran, “ he mimed.

“Amalgamated Lint’s up three point six,” I added.

      “Sointly (Certainly),” he quips..

I was having so much fun and I was so fascinated by the techniques of grafting that if it had not been for a free floating thought of what we had talked about the night before… I would have forgotten to bring up the subject of seeing and predicting future events.

I said, “Neo, last night I wanted to ask you about your thoughts of seeing the future and your take on time travel either physically or just with our minds or non-ordinary selves.”

Neo laughed as he continued to create clefts in the top ends and insert the grafts, while I continued to dress the wounds, “There is not diverting yer attention Vinny.” “Ya understand that no one really knows about all of the vagrancies of time, at least not well enough to talk about the subject adequately for blokes like you and me.”

“I have a friend in England named Stephen Hawkens who is considered one of the most preeminent physicist of all time, at least since Newton and Einstein and I cannot understand much of what he has tried ta explain to me.” “My confusion gets worse especially when Stephen gets beyond the layman’s lingo and into the higher realms of mathematics where I have not traveled successfully. Yet!”

“What do you mean by yet…. are you still studying mathematics,” I asked?

Neo chuckled as he looked up from his task and said, “I am always studying Vinny.” “There is so much I don’t know, so much I want to learn.” “I will be a student till the day I die.” “That fact brings me both joy and suffering.” “Anyway, I just want ya ta know that what I share with ya is just my opinion.” “I am what ya call an expert of my own opinion… nothing more.”

I said, “Some of your opinions correlate with many experts in various branches of scientific disciplines; don’t they?”

“Yeah, sometimes my expertise in the area of my opinions are sometimes right in line with the opinions of other people,” Neo quipped.

I said, “Okay, you gave me forewarning.” “Give me some credit.” “Just because I give you my undivided attention when I ask for your slant on things does not mean that I believe blindly to what ever you say.”

Neo laughs, raises his hands up to protest with the knife still in his left hand as he says, “Relax, I know you don’t listen and believe blindly… at least not anymore.” “I just know that yer just a trusting sort of fella that sometimes takes fer granted that when a person can talk and sound intelligent that they must know what they are talking about.”  “Especially when seemingly educated and intelligent people are discussing any subject without any apparent reference that they are giving their educated opinion; like yer friend Harry fer example.

Neo was doing his cutting task again and I was paddling on the dressing on the wounds as he says, “There was a time that you would believe a lot of what Harry or other would tell you because at the time they possessed more education in the areas that you were chatting about.” “Harry, like a lot of people, will come off like what they are talking about is gospel, that there are no uncertainties.” “They want ya ta believe that they hold the keys to the kingdom of knowledge.”

“You have problems seeing that because ya judge how other people will exchange information the same way that you would.” “When you are uncertain of yer sources of knowledge, you admit that ya may have some blind spots.” “Ya cannot conceive that when other people do not add in qualifiers that they are just discussing their opinions.” “You think that when other people do not admit that they are uncertain that they must be certain, because the few times you feel certain, you do not add in qualifiers.” “And why should ya if you are certain.”

I chewed on what he was saying and I had to admit that was a short coming of mine and I said as much to Neo.

Neo said, “Okay, yer forewarned that insofar as the subject of time travel by any mechanism or predicting the future is just my own opinion.” “Often highly regarded and accurate opinion, he mocked, but just an opinion nevertheless.”

“Okay, gotcha, I am forewarned,” I assured him.

Neo signaled that it was time for us to climb back down from the two sided orchard ladder that we had been perched on during our task. Once on the ground he moved the ladder to another location and again we made the journey into the furthermost portions of the new tree.

Neo resumed his cutting he said, “Time is an odd paradox.” Certain aspects of it are created in our minds and are illusions… other aspects are created and made real.” “Also, time does move linear - but not always.”

“Most people think of time as a timeline to run like a very straight river, every thing moving forward with nothing going back up stream.” “I think normally this is true.” “However, just like a stream there are eddies and backwashes…at least that’s the sense of it I have.” “Also, sometimes something dramatic happens that may allow a person to travel back upstream… at least with their non-ordinary self.”

“I also think that time is a stream in each persons life that as it moves forward in a linear fashion the stream itself moves and fluctuates so that there are also many areas that it is folded next to each other… much like a length of string that you can ball up.” “The string is still unbroken and you if you were small enough you could walk back and forth in either direction without a break; but the time line just like the ball of string you ball up as many areas that are in contact with each other.”

I seemed to follow what Neo was saying pretty well, which confused me.

      I said, “So far I don’t see a paradox.”

Neo grinned, and said, “For you and I, time seems to be moving forward?”

“Well doesn’t it move forward?” “Just look at how we age, look at how time changes the landscape?”

“Is our aging process a sign of time going forward?” “Does time really change the landscape, or do events such as weather cause the changes on landscape?”

“I’m not sure of what you mean,” I said.

“Most of the way we judge time started with celestial events.” “Our Earth travels around through a certain distance of space around our sun.” “Our Earth travels at the same speed through the same space around the sun consistently thereby setting in our minds a consistent pattern which we label as a unit of time called a year.”

Yes, “but we have other consistent markers that show time is real and moves consistently forward.”

“True, we have the four seasons in the temperate areas of our planet, summer, fall, winter, and fall; and at least two seasons in our equatorial areas, the dry season and the monsoon season.”

“The seasons are created by the tilting of our planet’s axis as it speeds through its course around the sun.” “The tilting event of our planet happens at a pace or speed if you will that is consistent.” “Our minds notice that the seasons caused by the tilting of the axis has an effect on the weather, the plants, the animals and if we have more or less sunlight.”

“Well what about the phases of the moon,” I asked”

Neo tilted his head & started tapping his chin as he said, “Yes, the moon is another celestial body that revolves around our planet at a consistent pace has much influence on tidal movements and biological processes.” “Our moon appears to wax and wane roughly thirty sun-rises to sun-downs and our minds have latched on to this as a unit of time.”

I wondered out loud, “Didn’t we latch on to these celestial regularities because it helped early man to know when to plant crops and to hunt certain animals?”

Still tapping his chin Neo said, “Yes creating units of time from the consistent pace and position of various celestial events was very useful.” “But, what would happen if our planet revolved around the sun at an inconsistent pace and speed around the sun.” “What would happen if all of the events that I just mentioned still happened, but they became totally chaotic?”

I said, “It would have chaotic unpredictable affects on the weather, and all life on our planet as we know it.”

Neo shifted & said, “Yes, the way we reckon time would change.”

“We all age roughly at the same pace… we could reckon time accordingly.”

      Neo looked thoughtful.

“I suppose we could do that, but there are some problems with that method.” “There are huge discrepancies with how fast people age.” Some people at the age of thirty appear to be in their fifties.” Neo smiled slyly. He said, “A few people in their eighties or older appear to be decades younger in both form and function.”

I thought I would jump in with a brilliant idea, “We could use indicators such the length that a man’s whiskers will grow in a day, in a month, during the growing season of certain plants, during the….” I realized that I could not follow that train of thought because all of the markers that I relied on…even took for granted no longer could be.”

Neo tilted his head and looked at me with an expression on his face as if to say, now you see the problem.”

Feeling foolish I said, “I just realized that even the length of which a person’s hair would grow differed among people so that’s an indicator that can not be relied upon.” “I suppose that we would all reckon time differently from each other.”

Neo just smiled as he waved a dismissive hand, “That’s true, not only would we all reckon time differently, as individuals we could reckon time differently to a drastic degree depending on our situation or experiences.”

Frowning I said, “I am not sure I know what you mean?”

Neo look off to his left and up as he rubbed his chin in a contemplative pose.

He let out a long sigh. “Once in the gym, I over heard you and Harry telling some of the other gym members of yer motorcycle trek across the United States.”

Confused I said, “Yeah, I’m not sure what that has to do with time.”

Neo said, “I’m not finished… I heard you and Harry telling other people that on many occasions you had been speeding on yer Honda at 120 miles per hour.”

I said, “Yes, sometimes I stayed at this speed for thirty minutes and at times I even exceeded this speed” “What does that have to do with time?”

Neo smiled, “Good question.” “I heard you tell people that once you got use to the speed, you felt like you were traveling at half the speed.” “Is that correct?’

I said, “Ah…yes… I remember how cool that was!” “It was the neatest thing, when I got use to the speed, not only did it feel like I was traveling at sixty miles per hour, but I felt that my reflexes felt both slow and yet I could perform more movements in the same space of time that would normally be too much for me.”

Neo said, “In thirty minutes ya travel about sixty miles and yet you felt like ya were traveling at a speed of sixty miles per hour.” “You perceptually slowed time down while you accelerated yer responses.” “The point is time and speed in yer mind changed.”

Agreeable I said, “That is true except that that does not change the actual speed that I was traveling, nor does it change the speed of the hands on a clock.”

Neo also being agreeable, “That is true but those devices were created by us because of our intellects need to have markers and devices to measure time and all things that work within our perception of time.”

“Our perceptions came from relevant and consistent movement of celestial bodies and the geological and biological events that we observe on our planet which is strongly if not mostly influence by the celestial bodies that we observe.”

“Then our perceptions are usually adjusted to the devices we created based on celestial movements and seasons.” “In fact I believe that humans become very disturbed if their perceptions of time, space or speed do not appear to correlate with the devices we created then there would be psychological discomfort.”

I said, “Are you saying without consistent biological, celestial, geological or mechanical markers of time that time would not exist?”

Neo said, “I don’t think time would exist for us the same way that it does now.” “But I think time or at least events would still move ‘forward.’” “Glaciers would still form, move and melt.” Some planets and moons would still revolve whether their movement was consistent or not.” “We would still age.” “Animals and plants would still be born, sprout, grow, procreate and then die.”

I wondered out loud, “So how come I feel that time does exist?” “How come I feel like there is a past, present and future?”

Neo emphasized, “Because you feel like time exists.”

Perplexed I said, “Wait a damn minute, Time will exists whether I believe it or not.” “If I was to die…hell if all humans would die, animals would still be born, grow, procreate, and die.” “Glaciers would still form, move and melt.”

Neo looked inward and said, “Do those events have anything to do with time?” “Perhaps things or events will happen regardless if there is a river of time or not.”

I was becoming thoroughly intrigued with the half-formed possibilities that had entered my mind.

I said, “Most likely if no animals, plants, or humans existed geological events would most likely still go on the way that they always have along with the workings of celestial bodies.” “Perhaps it is our thoughts that create, or add more possibilities to the phenomena of time.”

Neo said, “Yes, I think you are right.” “I think that plants, animals, and people give added dimension to time.” “I think that the added dimension is not merely perception but perhaps sometimes possibly a transcendent tool.”

“I said, “I honestly don’t know what you mean by a transcendent tool?”

Neo said, “In the most primitive sense you transcended time when you rode yer motorcycle at one hundred and twenty miles per hour – this allowed you to perform more necessary movements per unit of time.” “This number of movements at the high speed would normally have been tough fer ya ta do if ya had been traveling at half the speed; but you have used yer transcendent tool.” “You moved at twice yer physical speed while traveling at half yer normal marked time and you felt twice as relaxed and half the stress and exertion ta do what you wanted.”

I said, “Are you saying that time is depended on me?”

Neo said, “I think time is independent of us, but for our purposes, very dependent of us.” “Look at the Mayfly; it lives fer only twenty-four hours once it changes from larvae to adult.” “How would your perspective be if you only had a day to live as an adult?”

I said, “I’d be pissed that I was only given a day.”

He said, “Do you think that you would reckon time differently?”

I said, “I would be more appreciative of the time I had left.” “I would try to cram my day with the most productive and enjoyable things I could think of.”

Neo said, “Yeah, I have no doubt that you would.” “What kind of world would it be if we all lived the years we are given with that sort of attitude?”

I said, “I think it would be a better world.” “I suppose my life would be more productive, more enjoyable.”

Neo said, “Do you think that ya live yer life in the same way you said you would if ya only had a day?”

I said, “I sometimes try to live that way… but mostly, I don’t.”

      He said, “How come?”

I said, “I guess because I get busy, distracted” “I suppose I always think I can catch up in the future, or make up time… no pun intended.”

Neo snorted, “Yeah, that’s the way most people operate.” “Imagine different star systems…and imagine that these star systems that have planets with intelligent life.”

      “Okay.”

Neo said, “Now imagine that each of these various planets with intelligent life have celestial time markers just like we have, moons, other planets in their solar systems, and a sun or more that they can revolve around.”

Neo looked at me intently as he finished making another cleft in a top branch in the apple tree we were working in. He seemed to be checking if I was taking all of these new thoughts in.

I suddenly notice that as we were working that my mind had been so engrossed in our conversation that I almost become unaware as to where I was.

I said, “I can imagine all that.”

Neo said, “Imagine visiting a planet with people as intelligent as you imagine us to be, or even more intelligent.” “How would you or they reckon time if their planet yer on takes half the time of our planet to revolve entirely around their sun?” “In addition, their days are twice as long and their moon takes three times longer to revolve around their planet.” “Do ya think this could change yer perception or philosophy of time?”

I felt as if my brain was beginning to cook and I said as much to Neo.

Neo said, “Yeah, but what’s really going to cook yer bacon is that some of these planets have multiple moons and two or three suns.” “Just imagine what a bugaboo of a task that sentient beings on those planets have trying to align all of the markers to create time pegs which they could utilize to help them to increase their chances of survival and to master their environment.” “One more item before ya say anything…just think of the millions of possible permutations of how a constellation of celestial bodies can function around sentient beings living on their planet.”

Now my brain was on over load.”

I said, “Neo, I say we take a break and eat some food.”

I pointed at the sun which had risen past the noonday position.

I said, “Apparently, we have loss track of time.” “I bet its past one p.m.”

Neo looked up at the sun then looked around, “Yer right, it is about one”

We went to the farmer’s porch to sit and relax in the shade. Neo opened the cooler and tossed me a lunch he had made for me. The only thing I had brought along was a few cans of Vienna sausages and a red hot spicy burrito from Seven-Eleven.

He had made me three hefty smoked salmon sandwiches with slices of avocados, tomatoes added in with watercress leaves. He had put a certain type of spread that he picked up at a deli which he said he really favored. The bread was multi-grain with chopped nuts and raisins mixed it.

Neo looked up and said, “I took the liberty of making yer sandwiches the way I like mine.” “I figured that since you had said that the only thing you don’t like ta eat is okra…I was safe.”

“I was touched that Neo would take the time to think of me and prepare me with a days worth of food.”

I held up the sandwich for inspection and I liked what I saw, “Wow… this is one good looking sandwich Neo… thanks.”

      Neo winked, “Sure thing mate.”

I took a large bite, it was absolutely delicious. He looked at me, his eyebrows arching their inquiry.

I looked over, my mouth occupied and I gave him a ‘hearty thumbs up’. He seemed pleased that I loved the sandwich and commenced to tear into his sandwiches.”

I asked, “You don’t mind if we finish the discussion while we eat do you?”

Neo said, “I don’t mind at all Vinny.” “Do ya think you would like to live yer life like you experienced on yer motorcycle trip?”

I said, “I think it would be great.”

He said, “Why do you think it would be so great?”

I said, “I feel if I could live like that all the time I would be living two to four times more fully.”

Neo pondered, “If you didn’t have clocks or any markers to measure time would you feel like you live a longer life?”

I struggled for the right choice of words to describe what I felt…(I still struggle with the right choice of words).

I said, “I don’t know if the word longer is the best word… I think I would have felt like I lived longer during the motorcycle trips, but I think a better word is I felt like I live more.” “I felt like I experience twice as much in half the time that I normally do.” “During those times… I mean experiences… I felt relaxed… not rushed at all.”

Neo smiled. “Do you notice that you often want to use the word time to explain yer experiences?”

I said, “Yeah, it feels like I should… and it feels like it is not quite right.”

He said, “If we did not have the normal markers to measure time, how do you think we would distinguish the past, presence, and future… or any portion of what we call time?”

I chewed on my sandwich as I tried to digest what we had chatted about and I worried over the problem Neo presented me. Neo poured out some cool mint tea into a mug and hand me the drink and then he pour one for him self.

Neo encouragingly said, “Take yer time Vinny.”

I pondered and worked the problem as I finished the second half of my first sandwich. Finally, I decided I was on to something.

I said, “I think we can reckon time from our experiences or the anticipation of our experiences.” “I think we kind of do that now.”

Neo looked pleased, for what I did not know. He made a sign encouraging me to continue.

I volunteered, “I think it is our memories which we use to measures the past.” “I think that maybe we are our memories.”

He said, “Yes, a good portion of what we are--is our memories of all of our experiences.” “What about present time, or the future?”  “How do we… how do you reckon both the present and the future?”

I said, “I guess we reckon the present by what we are doing and feeling now.”

Neo said, “And now, and now… and now… and now… and so on.” “How about the future?”

I said, “I think the future is reckoned by what we anticipate, our plans and dreams.”

Neo agreed, “Yeah, I think yer right.” “So what do you think about the future…what determines the future?”

      I wondered, “Is it predetermined?”

He said, “I think the future is not predetermined… I think it is determined by our past experiences, what we feel and think now.” “I think where we decide to go from where we are determines the future.”

Neo smile and said, “Yes… what we decide to do from now, and now… and now… and now…and so on determines how the future will turn out.”

I said, “What about unforeseen events that cause unpredictable things?” “Good things… bad things?”

Neo said, “Well what ever happens good or bad you will go from their which at that time will be now and from there you will go from now and now… and so forth.” “It’s all up to us.”

I said, “So how is it that I have sometimes dreamed about future events that have come true?” “I could see how the brain could extrapolate potential events… but people, places & conversations?”

Neo asked, “What do you think?”

I admitted, “I am confused… if we agree the future is not predetermined, how is it possible to have glimpses of the future?” “I mean you did seem to agree that you thought we could get glimpses… am I correct?

Neo smiled at my use of ‘am I correct’— his favorite question.”

He said, “Yes, I do believe that we have glimpses of the future & yes I do believe that the future is not predetermined.” “What may really rock yer world is I believe that the past is not written in stone.” “But let’s focus on yer question about us seeing glimpses of the future.”

I said, “How is it that we can see glimpses of the future?”

He said, “Remember I said that time is often like a river & a string all balled up with many places touching?”

      I said, “Yes, I remember.

He said, “Sometimes many future events are touching where you are at now… or rather where yer consciousness during dream states is hovering.”

The concept that Neo was proposing, if I was correct… was that the stream of time was at times folded & touching close enough so that during dream states, or other types of non-ordinary states seeing a future that had already happen.”

Frustrated I wondered, “That concept is hard to grasp.” “First you say that the future is not predetermined; then you say that we can sometimes see the future events that have not happened,”  “How can we sometimes see the future that is not predetermined.”

Neo looked thoughtful as he was chewing on another sandwich.

He laughed & said, “What will really fry yer brain is that is because in another way the future has happened…. in fact I think several time lines will happen… have happened.” “Look at the tree.” “It starts with a trunk & goes in one direction, then it branches off in different directions & then those branches branch off in even more directions & so on.”

      My mind was reeling.

I said, “How in hell could we have many possible future time lines?”

“I think when people are at a crossroads in their lives, something where they may be on the fence with making a major life decision… where they have an epiphany which could be the cause of time split.”

He asked, “What the devil are you talking about?”

I said, “I’m saying that I believe it is possible that when you go to a crossroad in life, you could split.” “You could go in one direction, but another part of yer consciousness goes in another direction; living a life just as full & as real as the Vinny here is living.” “Sometimes the Vinny here senses the split just as I imagine the Vinny the split from you may also sense.”

Neo’s thoughts intrigued me, but I could not help again to wonder if he suffered from some sort of mental delusions.

Neo saw the look on my face and this amused him.

Smugly Neo said, “Well, it is only my opinion.” “Al Einstein also entertained these thoughts.”

I chided Neo & asked, “Is this where you got this idea from?”

Neo smartly said, “No, lots of people have entertained these thoughts because they have felt this split.”

“Admit it… you have felt it once or twice also.”

Begrudgingly I said, “Well… I thought that maybe I had for a split second… but I never really believed it.” ‘It’s just too nuts.”

Neo said, “What do you think about Einstein entertaining these thoughts?”

I said, “Well… Einstein can get away with it.”

      Neo asked, “Why?”

I said, “Well because Einstein is famous for being smart on matters concerning time.”

Neo asked, “So Einstein is allowed to entertain such thoughts & we shouldn’t dare.”

I said, “I guess that is silly when you think about it.”

A rogue thought caught my attention about the concept of splitting time.

Excitedly I said, “Shit, if it is possible for time to split… for us to split & follow separate time lines, then this would mean that I could conceivable have more than one past since I was born.”

Neo said, “Yeah, it really gets dicey, doesn’t it?” “That does not include the belief of reincarnation.”

I said, “You mentioned that the past was not entirely written in concrete – is this why?”

Neo warned, “No, I said, that yer past was not necessarily fixed because I believe it is possible to change it.”

“You mean change history,” I asked?

Neo said, “Yeah, kind of… but not in the way yer thinking.” “Just your history can be changed, & the less you try to change the easier or more likely it is ta happen.”

Confused I said, “Could you give me an example?”

Neo said, “Sure. Basically, if you want to change one incident… let’s say an unpleasant meeting between you & another person which may have caused you a minor problem.” “This would be easier to change instead of going back & changing your entire history so that the you who is here now will be magically wealthy & educated & so on.”

Intrigued I said, “Does a person travel to the past or future in his physical body?”

Neo leaned forward & emphatically said, “I personally can’t cite an incident where a person’s physical body travels in time, at least not without the use of a vortex or some outside influence.”

My mind spinning I asked, “What do you mean by vortex or outside influence?”

Neo with slow patience said, “Some vortexes are areas on the planet where during certain times can sometimes act as portals to the past, future, or to other places & dimensions.” It is through these vortexes that supposedly your physical body can travel through.” “These vortexes exist throughout the universe, & many are on this planet in places such as Sedona, Arizona & Gold Hill Oregon.” “Generally vortexes are strong electromagnetic & gravitational forces that are thought to be caused by the intersection of the earth’s ley lines.”

I said, “Shit, I have never heard of ley lines.” I just want to know… are you telling we can travel in this way?”

Neo continued, “I have never done this, nor have I ever known anyone that has ever traveled that way.” “There are stories that ya hear about & read about.” “I can’t confirm or deny if this type of travel is factual.” “Traveling forward or backwards in time or to other dimensions, realities, & distances with yer non-ordinary body I believe is possible.” “It is with yer non-ordinary body that you can travel ta make changes on yer present body or reality.”

      “Within reason,” he added.

Wondering I asked, “How is it that our consciousness can travel in time, or influence time?”

Neo explained, “Because even though time may operate out of our consciousness, but also our consciousness is part of time” “Being part of time gives us the chance to influence time.

Finished with our lunch we decided to get back to the trees.

After another hour the farmer comes out with pot full of bones with scraps of meat on them. All of his dogs came running up to him barking, & eager for the meaty bones. The farmer spilled the pot of scraps in a pile on to the ground. The dogs rushed in madly for the bones. The alpha dog, the mastiff-Staffordshire mixed growl, nipped at the other dogs & they let him move in first for his first choice. It appeared as if he grabbed one of the choice bones that was larger & meatier than the others. He grabbed it & sauntered over to a spot under a maple tree.

As soon as the alpha dog moved away from the pile, the other dogs started scrapping & scrabbling for their bones while we were grafting on the scions. The wannabe alpha dog ran in snarling & nipping & grabbing what he wanted.

Instead of sauntering off to a good spot like the alpha dog had done, he laid down near the pile while he tried to scarf down the bone he picked, the other dogs tried to come in for the morsels of their choice. The dog spent more time trying to keep the other dogs away from the bones. When one would sneak in to grab one this selfish dog would rush over to take away the spoils. Sometimes as he was taking a scrap away from one dog, another dog or two would sneak in & grab scraps for themselves. The selfish dog would then rush over to the other dogs & bully them for their scraps.

The lesser dogs kept him so busy chasing them down & stealing back the bones that he could scarcely eat.

The alpha dog calmly finished his meal & then he trotted over to the pile & grabbed another of the choicest pieces & back to the shade he went with his prize.

The other dogs kept number two harried while they managed to also get their fill.

I found the entire dog show amusing as hell.

“What a greedy bastard,” I said. “He is so worried that the other dogs are getting something that he isn’t that he is unable to enjoy a meal.”

      Neo stretched & laughed.

Neo smiled & said, “There is another lesson for the subject of time.”

“How in the hell do you figure that,” I asked?

Neo stretching his arms against the tree said, “There is only so much time that we can use.” “How we use it will determine how well we do in life.” “Look at the dogs.” “The big alpha male is not stressed.” “He directly goes for what he wants & focuses on the task at hand.” “He calmly attends to his needs.” “When he was done with his meal, he simply moved directly to get more of what he wanted & did not concern himself with what the other dogs had or not.’

Neo explained further, “The dog who is second in command has been misspending his time by racing around trying to grab up everything, worrying about what the others have.” “The poor dog doesn’t think that he could never eat all of the meat himself, but instead just takes what the other dogs have.” “As you can see they are managing to eat when he is preoccupied with one of the others.”

He said, “In one way or another, many people are like the second in command, or like the others spending more time than the like scrabbling to hold own what they have worked for.”

“Many people live like the Beta dog at times & during other times they live like the lesser dogs.” “Very few people get into the position of alpha.”

I said, “Don’t you have to be the smartest or the strongest to live like an alpha dog?”

Neo added, “Or if you’re not the smartest or strongest, you can be the most realistic, & direct in getting what you want out of life & that is the best use of your time.” “That is more important than worrying about traveling in time.
