EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK:

VINCE'S GYM

Sacrificing Your Life is Often the Ultimate Act of Service
Juan said, “Lets do it mate!” “Those of you who haven’t been in
the military but have friends that were or are, would you say
that they think it is important to serve our country even at the
risk of sacrificing their lives?”
A half a dozen
people in the gym said the people they had known who were or had
been in the military thought it was important to serve their
country. They said that the majority of the people that they
knew did not agree with the Vietnam War but all of the people
that they knew thought it was their duty and privilege to
protect their country in a World War one or two scenario.
Everyone seemed
to agree that there existed people that were selfish, scurrilous
cowards who would do everything in their power to avoid serving
their country no matter what the circumstances.”
Juan looked
over at Norm and Norm’s face was burning with self-consciousness
and said, “Except for people like you and Muhammad Ali who are
conscientious objectors for religious reasons of course.”
Harry said,
“That was a lot of bullshit that Muhammad Ali fought to keep out
of the war!” “Talk about incongruent and conflicted philosophy,
-- he gets rich fighting and beating on other people and he is
against fighting for his own country, what a crock of shit!”
I said, “I
think I can understand where Muhammad Ali, was coming from, I
think it is one thing to be pitting yourself against a willing
opponent, an opponent that has trained their whole life to
endure pain and defeat; it is another thing to fight and kill
people that have not prepared their whole lives, or to be sent
over seas to kill people that have never hurt you, to kill
people for a country that did not care about Ali’s civil
rights.” “I don’t have a problem with what Muhammad Ali chose to
do.”
Harry said,
‘Aright, aright, were getting off the subject, come on Juan lets
get on with your point.”
Juan said, “We
all have established that it is necessary to sometimes serve our
country, which in essence is often serving ourselves.”
“We have established
that sometimes it is necessary to sacrifice our lives for our
loved ones, such as our children, parents, siblings, spouse, or
friends, and some people are willing to do it for strangers, am
I correct?”
Everyone
agreed.
Juan said, “Am
I correct that everyone here would sacrifice their lives if the
proper situation presented itself?”
Everyone agreed
again.
Juan said, “My
guess is since everyone here is willing to serve their country
when appropriate.” “Everyone here is willing to sacrifice their
life for a good cause such as for the lives of their loved
ones.”
Juan shrugged
his shoulders & spread his hands imploringly, “I am assuming
that everything else in life is a cake walk.” “Hell mates, it
seems like all of you are the type of people that will stand up
for yourselves even at the cost of your lives if the
circumstances justified the cause, am I right?”
Everyone
agreed, especially Harry, Larry and Old Mike.
Harry said, ‘Of
course we stand up for ourselves.” He said, “I don’t back down
from anything!”
