EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK:

VINCE'S GYM

The Importance of Standing Up for the Smaller Day to Day Stuff

Juan said, “Lets forget the life and death stuff for now, instead let’s look at the little unpleasant day to day stuff.”

I looked at Juan and wondered what was so important about day to day stuff after we covered the big stuff and so I asked him why.”

Juan said, “To get by day to day don’t we have to take care of the nitty-gritty stuff?”

I said, “Okay, like what for instances?”

Juan said, “Does anyone here ever deal with financial advisors or anyone that takes care of their money or investments?”

A few people raised said that they did.

Juan asked, “If you hired a investment firm to take care of your money, to guard it and invest it in the way that you have instructed, that’s what you all would expect them to do wouldn’t you; especially if you signed a contract with them and they were being paid by you to do the job is that right?”

      Everyone agreed again.

Juan said, “Harry, do you think that you have the right to monitor your account, to see how your investments are doing and to check the effectiveness of the people you hire?”

Harry said with an arrogant tone, “Of course I would, a person would be a fool not to check on there own interest, especially if you hired to have someone else take care of your money.”

Juan asked, “Does anyone disagree with Harry?”

      No one disagreed with Harry.”

Juan said, “What would you do if you were refused your right to check on your account?”

Rock said, “I would kick their ass.”

Mike said, “I would take legal action if I had to.”

Harry said, “Absolutely, I would sneak up on the bastards and hurt them permanently.”

Juan said, “If you found out that they were stealing from you or neglected to do their job while collecting the wages you were paying them, thereby causing you to lose your entire life savings, your children’s college fund or even go so far as to put you in debt for the rest of your lives, what would you do?”

Everyone was in agreement that they would do what ever it took to get back their savings and take legal action to make the thieves or irresponsible parties for negligence.

Juan asked, “What would any of you do if you owned a ranch and you had work crews that you hired to build the roads on your land, to care for the woodlands, and to farm and care for the animals that you own, or the contractors to take care of the house you live in the barn that you use; lets say one or all of the contractors took your money and did not do what they were contracted to do?”

Everyone agreed that legal action would have to be taken.”

Juan said, “If you were contracting a company to give your children the best education wouldn’t and if they were not doing their job, what would you do?”

Everyone agreed that they would take appropriate legal action.

Juan asked, “if you had paid an insurance company to cover you in the event that you became disabled or if you needed to be cared by a doctor and if the insurance company reneged on the contract after you have paid thousands of dollars, would you just shrug you shoulders and say the hell with it?”

Harry said, “I would do what ever it took to get what I paid for.”

      Everyone in the gym agreed.

Juan asked, “You all know that taking legal action is very expensive, stressful and can take years.”

“To make matter worse, often times the judgment may not be in your favor, and if it is the company or person may not be able to pay you back0, or may not be forced to make things right.”

Gary said, “Yeah but what else can you do?”

Harry and Larry both said that they would hunt down the people that screwed them over & rag them into the woods and hurt them for life.

Harry said, “Hit! Hah! I just may kill them.”

Juan said, “Yeah but all of that is illegal, or expensive and very stressful.” He looked around the gym and said, “Wouldn’t it be best to just let it go, you know turn the other cheek and forgive the person who screwed you over?”

Norm the conscientious objector yelled out, “Heck no!” “You can’t let people get away with stealing, or breaking their word and hurting you or your family!”

Harry said, “I thought you said that things were in God’s hands?”

Norm said, “God said, ‘thou shall not kill’, and since killing is out of the question, you can take things into your own hands legally, ‘God helps those who helps themselves.” Several people mentioned that killing and maiming would not be out of the question.

Juan said, “But why not just turn the other cheek and let it go?”

Norm said, “No, because all of the bad scenarios that you brought up affects our family directly or indirectly, it is our responsibility to make sure that we take care of ourselves so that we can best serve our families, and it is up to us to insure our families future.”

      Harry said, “Damn right!”

Larry grinned savagely and said, “Double Damn right!”

Everyone else in the gym was aggressively yelling out their agreement with Harry, Larry and Norm as if they resented Juan would even suggest that people not look after their families best interest.

Juan looked at Harry and asked, “Do you think what Norm suggests is correct?”

Harry said, “Yes, that would be the right thing to do.”

Larry said, “There is no other option for people who are bold enough to demand what they deserve!”

Everyone in the gym agreed.” I had reservations, I wasn’t sure why or what they were exactly but they were there.

Juan said, “What if you were not getting the satisfaction you need from the legal recourse?” “What would you do?” Before Harry or Larry could say anything Juan said, “Let’s forget about killing and maiming for the time being”

Mike said, “I would put an ad in the paper, or picket with friends and relatives telling everyone to beware of doing business with such untrustworthy people.”

Kurt said, “I would try and get on TV to tell people to avoid doing business with rip off artists and I would look to see what agencies or people outside of the legal system that could help me.”

Juan said, “And if that fails, then what?”

Harry said, “Then we maim and kill!”

      Several people said, “Hell yes!”

Juan continued, “Do you think that it would make sense to enlist many of these other techniques before, during and after legal or illegal techniques?”

Everyone agreed that it would be the most intelligent course of action.”
