John’s Most Recent Review

The following is an excerpt from a review of Ballet Fantastique’s performance at the Hult Center for the Performing Arts in Eugene, Oregon, on February 7, 2009. John accompanied several of the dances for that performance, and played some solos as well.

“Act II, “Danse en Rouge or Variations in Red” was exciting and passionate. The combination of skilled dancers, creative choreography, fine art, gorgeous costumes and accomplished musicians was a total success. Classical guitarist John Jarvie immediately set the mood as he strolled onto the stage playing “Malaguena.”
“Jarvie has performed classical guitar music for 30 years. Former Register-Guard arts reporter Fred Crafts described him as “a spectacularly gifted artist who commands the fingers of a virtuoso and the sensitivity of a poet,” and he certainly exhibited that command Saturday.
“... As Jarvie placed a red rose softly on the stage, Amelia Unsicker picked it up and danced romantically to his guitar. Jarvie and Unsicker performed three delightful duets during the evening.”

“...Arpeggiated harmonies rolled like waves over and around the melodic lines, with bell‑like harmonics appearing like points of light.”

“Especially in playing the Spanish composers, with their passionate bass string runs and dramatic downsweeping barre chords...Jarvie is clearly onto the path of drawing everything from the guitar that its design allows.”

“...His performance of Beethoven's ‘'für Elise’ made one wonder whether the German master was making a piano transcription of a guitar composition.”
  William Brower

“John brings to his public presentation the same warm and relaxed personality which he shows person to person...  What I appreciated about John's playing were his clean intonation, meticulous attention to detail, and clear articulation... Added to that were a warm sound, a keen sense of style and phrasing...in short, the makings of a fine evening of listening.”
