Useful Web Sites

IMPORTANT NOTE—YCS offers an educational service only and should not be used in place of a visit, call, consultation or the advice of your physician or other qualified health care provider. If you have a question regarding cancer or treatment options, please consult one or more qualified oncologists. (See full Legal Disclaimer). Some of the information available on the web is anecdotal and MUST be used cautiously. Below are the links that YCS has found particularly useful in helping cancer patients understand their best treatment options. The links here and the contents of this site will change often, as new information and resources are discovered.

Comprehensive Cancer Info
http://www.nccn.org
The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), a not-for-profit alliance of 20 of the world's leading cancer centers, is dedicated to improving the quality and effectiveness of care provided to patients with cancer.

http://www.ccrgonline.org/
Colorado Cancer Resource Group, a non-profit offers online resources, designed primarily for Coloradans, to help during and after a cancer diagnosis. Both national and local resources cover a wide range of useful info, including possible financial aid. Spanish version available.

http://www.infomedsearch.com
INFOMED is an easier way to research PubMed online. PubMed covers many published medical journals. Especially useful for those who want “Evidence-based medicine”. (Our bias...this phrase is popular now for some political reasons. Useful stuff but limited, generally, to research which is funded by big pharmaceutical companies, with a bias that shows). To YCS, this is like looking at the world with one eye shut. You will miss lots of potentially useful information until you open both eyes.

http://www.curetoday.com
Excellent coverage from CURE magazine. Covers cancer tumor types as well as research and education on treatments.

http://www.info.com/
Uses many search engines at once: Google, Ask Jeeves, Yahoo, Altavista, Teoma, Fast, Inktomi, Kanoodle, LookSmart, About, Overture, Open Directory, Findwhat, Ah-Ha. Put the exact name of the cancer or drug of interest and find many links, including ways to save money buying some drugs.

Go to this site, click on the word HEALTH (left column), then search for your topic of interest. Good starting place.

www.sciencedaily.com
PC Magazine named this their “Site of the Week on March 21, 2003”, saying, “Anyone who follows science and technology knows the frustration of deciphering articles on these subjects in the mainstream press. ... There are plenty of monthly magazines that give the straight dope on the important research and findings of the day, but what if you don't want to wait until the next edition of Science or Scientific American comes out? That's where ScienceDaily comes in.”

http://www.veritasmedicine.com
An easy-to-use, comprehensive database for patients to use. Confidentially matches diagnoses to clinical trials. Also has high-quality information about current and investigational treatments developed by physicians from leading academic medical centers.

http://cancerguide.org/
Steve Dunn's web page—best single starting place if you are newly diagnosed or a beginner at online cancer research

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/
For more advanced/curious folks. PubMed, a service of the National Library of Medicine, provides access to over 16 million citations from MEDLINE and other life science journals for biomedical articles back to the 1950s and additional life science journals. Includes links to many sites providing full text articles and other related resources. Note: YCS generally recommends that you only seek articles that are less than 2 years old.

Alternative/Complementary Treatments
YCS has added these links due to increasing personal and client interest. We now have a bit of first-hand knowledge in this area. Our goal is to strengthen this section in 2006, and we appreciate any information about credible online resources that you can offer, by emailing us at dianebgold@yahoo.com. If you are a patient with interest in this, we strongly prefer to talk to you directly, as these practitioners and treatments can be more difficult to assess online. Please go to our Home Page, scroll to the bottom and complete the brief questionnaire. Once we know your question and preferred phone number, we will phone you to see if we can help out.
